nternet Browsers are probably one of the most used applications in our PC’s everyday. Everytime we use the computer, we open a bunch of Browser tabs in it. Have you wondered what effect that might have on your laptop’s battery life?
To figure this out, WIRED tested a Mac laptop running OS X 10.8 and Chrome, Firefox and Safari. The result showed, the more tabs you open, the more power is consumed. But is that alot?
So, if you have a 100 browser tabs open, your battery life will be about 1 hour shorter. But how much of a difference does just one tab make? Since there is the base power of the computer, this battery life per tab depends on how many browser tabs you have open. If I take the partial derivative of my time function with respect to n, I get the decrease in battery life per tab… The more browser tabs you have open, the less effect each new tab has on the battery life. This is because if you have a ton of tabs open, you already have a shorter battery life.
So, the chance that we open 100 tabs at once is near to 0. Therefore, we can say that we can continue using our browser the way we are using without worrying much about the battery life.
